Chandigarh – The City Beautiful is a marvel planned and designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and American Architect Albert Mayer. The city was named after Chandi Mata a hindu goddess of power and the name means Fortress (Garh) of Chandi and it was derived from Chandi Mandir ( Old Temple Of Chandi Mata ) near Panchkula city.
Post independence Chandigarh is one of the earliest planned cities and is internationally known for its architecture and modern design. After partition when Lahore had become a part of Pakistan and Shimla was serving as a capital to Punjab. Then It was Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru who wanted to build a new and modern city to serve as capital of Punjab state. A perfect location with plenty of natural resources in the foothills of Shivalik range of Himalayas was identified and Planning and execution was started in 1949 and in 1953 Chandigarh got its status of capital of Punjab state. In 1966 when the State of Haryana was formed, Chandigarh started to serve as a shared capital for both Punjab and Haryana.

The city covers an area of around 114 square kilometres and is at an altitude of 1054 Ft from sea level. Chandigarh is Divided in 56 sectors, city is well planned with dedicated residential, Industrial and commercial spaces designed without affecting the green belt and nature. Many gardens dedicated to almost every sector adds to the natural beauty of Chandigarh. Still the Chandigarh administration is very strict in terms of preserving the Trees and forest area in and around the city.
