Embrace the Chill: Your Ultimate Winter Guide to Gulmarg
Gulmarg is more than just a view; it’s an action-packed destination.
By Ajit Brar

Gulmarg, the “Meadow of Flowers,” transforms into a majestic Winter Wonderland from December to March. Forget the lush green meadows; in winter, this resort town in Kashmir becomes a canvas of pristine white snow, offering an intoxicating blend of serene natural beauty and high-octane adventure. If you’re dreaming of a snow-filled escape, here is your essential guide on why to visit, what to do, where to explore, and how to reach Gulmarg in the colder months.
Why Visit Gulmarg in Winter?
The answer is simple: Snow! Gulmarg is internationally renowned as one of the best skiing and winter sports destinations in Asia.
- A Skier’s Paradise: With some of the best powder snow globally, Gulmarg caters to all skill levels. Its slopes are perfect for both seasoned professionals and absolute beginners looking to try their first ski or snowboard lesson.
- The Gulmarg Gondola Experience: Home to the world’s second-highest cable car, the Gulmarg Gondola is an attraction in itself. It ferries you to over 13,000 feet, offering unbelievably panoramic views of the Pir Panjal range and the snow-covered valley.
- Unparalleled Scenery: The entire landscape, from the tall pine trees laden with snow to the perfectly white, rolling meadows, is straight out of a fairy tale. The stillness and beauty of the snow-draped mountains are truly mesmerizing.
Must-Do Things in Gulmarg in Winter
Gulmarg is more than just a view; it’s an action-packed destination. Here are the top activities to try:
- Skiing and Snowboarding: This is the main draw. Hire equipment and an instructor from one of the many ski schools to hit the slopes at the base or take the Gondola for advanced runs.
- Gulmarg Gondola Ride: The two-phase ride is an essential experience.
- Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): Enjoy gentle slopes for snow activities.
- Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): Reach the high-altitude peak for breathtaking views and access to advanced ski terrain.
- Snow Adventures: Indulge in other exciting snow activities like sledging (sliding down slopes on a simple wooden sledge, often guided by locals), snowshoeing, or riding an ATV/Snowmobile on the snow-covered tracks.
- Ice Skating: Head to the dedicated ice skating rinks for a fun experience, suitable for all ages.
- Enjoy Local Cuisine: After a cold day outdoors, warm up with Kashmiri delicacies like Rogan Josh, Dum Aloo, and, most importantly, a steaming cup of traditional Kashmiri Kahwa (green tea with spices and almonds).
Best Spots to Explore
Beyond the main slopes, these locations offer unique winter vistas and experiences:
- Apharwat Peak: Accessible via the Gondola’s second phase, this peak at over 13,000 feet offers stunning views of the Line of Control (LOC) and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. It’s a haven for high-altitude skiing.
- Alpather Lake (Frozen Lake): A trek (or pony/snow vehicle ride) from the Apharwat peak takes you to this high-altitude lake. In winter, it is completely frozen, creating an ethereal, glassy expanse surrounded by snow-laden mountains.
- Drung Waterfall (Frozen Waterfall): Located near Tangmarg (the gateway to Gulmarg), this waterfall freezes solid in the peak of winter (often January-February), transforming into a spectacular wall of ice—a truly unique sight.
- Gulmarg Golf Course: Covered under a thick blanket of snow, the world’s highest green golf course becomes a vast, serene meadow perfect for peaceful snow walks and cross-country skiing.
- St. Mary’s Church & Maharani Temple: These historical structures, set against the striking white backdrop, make for beautiful photographic subjects and offer a quiet moment of reflection.
How to Reach Gulmarg in Winter
Gulmarg is well-connected despite the heavy snowfall, though the last leg of the journey requires specific transport.
Most Recommended is By Air
- Nearest Airport: Srinagar International Airport (SXR), about 56 km away.
- Srinagar airport is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
- From the airport, you can hire a private or pre-paid taxi. The drive takes about 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the snow conditions.
By Road
- Srinagar to Gulmarg: The last 12-13 km stretch, especially from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, experiences heavy snowfall.
- Special Transport: During peak winter, regular vehicles may be restricted up to Tangmarg. From Tangmarg, you must hire a local vehicle (usually 4×4 jeeps) with snow chains on the tires to safely complete the final ascent to Gulmarg. Many taxis from Srinagar will arrange for a transfer in Tangmarg.
- The road journey itself is scenic, winding through pine forests completely dusted with snow.
By Rail
- Nearest Major Railhead: Jammu Tawi Railway Station (JAT), approximately 290 km away.
- From Jammu, you would need to take a bus or train to Srinagar and then proceed by road to Gulmarg. This is a significantly longer journey than flying directly to Srinagar.
Essential Travel Tip for Winter
- Layer Up! Temperatures drop well below freezing. Pack heavy woollens, thermal wear, waterproof jackets and pants, gloves, caps, and waterproof snow boots.
- Book Gondola in Advance: Tickets for the Gulmarg Gondola, especially Phase 2, can sell out quickly, so book online ahead of time.
- Hire a Local Guide: For snow activities and trekking to spots like Alpather Lake, hiring an experienced local guide is highly recommended for safety.
