Kashmir is also referred to as paradise on earth due to many scenic, beautiful locations and destinations. It is one of the most famous tourist places in Kashmir. Gulmarg also known as Meadows of Flower ( Gul means flower and marg means meadow or valley in local language ) is a small town near Srinagar in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Gulmarg was named by the mughal emperor Yousuf Chak Shah, which was inspired by the variety of wild flowers found in Gulmarg. It was a favourite summer retreat for mughals and most of the Rulers of Kashmir preferred to spend their free time here.

During British rule Gulmarg was developed as a Summer vacation destination to escape from the hot weather of plains. Three Golf Courses were established as a part of recreation activities and one of them is the highest Golf course at an altitude of 8,690 Ft. Ski clubs and hunting are some other things to do in Gulmarg were developed by Britishers. After Independence the Indian Government Tried to create a world class ski resort in Gulmarg and many foreign experts were hired to do so.

  • Gulmarg Gondola: The Gulmarg Gondola is one of Asia’s highest and longest ropeway facilities. It operates in two phases:
    • Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): Offers expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
    • Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): A paradise for skiers and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, including glimpses of the Harmukh Range and Nanga Parbat.
  • Apharwat Peak: Located at a staggering altitude of approximately 4,200 meters. This peak is accessible via the Gulmarg Gondola’s second phase. It is famous for winter sports and adventure activities.

  • Winter (October to March): This is the peak season for snow lovers and adventure sports enthusiasts. The valley is covered in thick snow, make’s it perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. Temperatures range from -4°C to 11°C, often dropping below freezing. Heavy snowfall usually occurs from early January to mid-February.
  • Summer (April to June): This is a moderate season and ideal for those who want to experience Gulmarg’s beauty without heavy snow. The weather is pleasant and comfortable (13°C to 29°C), perfect for sightseeing, nature walks, trekking, and golfing. The meadows are lush with blooming wildflowers.
  • Monsoon (July to September): This is the off-season with minimal rainfall. While outdoor excursions might be limited due to intermittent rains, the hill station transforms into a vibrant green landscape, offering a unique serene experience. Temperatures range from 18°C to 35°C.

How to Reach Gulmarg

Gulmarg is well-connected and accessible through various modes of transport:

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (Srinagar Airport) (SXR), approximately 56 km away. Srinagar Airport has regular flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From Srinagar, you can hire a cab or private vehicle to reach Gulmarg (approx. 2 to 2.5 hours drive).
  • By Train: Although trial runs are on going for Jammu Srinagar Rail Line, But The closest major railway station to Gulmarg Till now is Jammu Tawi Railway Station (JAT), which is around 280 km from Srinagar. From Jammu, you can take a bus, shared vehicle, or taxi to Srinagar, and then another taxi or private vehicle to Gulmarg.
  • By Road: Gulmarg is well-connected by road.
    • From Srinagar, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive. You can hire private taxis, shared taxis (which usually go up to Tangmarg, 13 km before Gulmarg, from where you’ll need another taxi), or even take SRTC daily sightseeing coaches during summer.
    • For those enjoying a long road trip, driving from Delhi to Gulmarg (approximately 1,000 km) takes around 18-20 hours via NH44, passing through cities like Ambala and Jammu. Buses are also available from Delhi to Srinagar.
