Tucked away in the serene, high-altitude landscape where the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh meets the rugged beauty of Spiti Valley, lies the captivating village of Nako. At an elevation of approximately 3,662 meters (12,014 ft), Nako is a destination that offers a profound sense of peace and a unique blend of natural and cultural wonders. More than just a stop on the famous Spiti Valley circuit, Nako is a destination in itself, inviting travelers to slow down, breathe in the thin mountain air, and immerse themselves in a world where time seems to stand still.
Why Visit Nako Village and Lake?
Nako is a place for those who seek tranquility, spiritual solace, and a raw connection with nature. It’s a refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life, offering an escape into a world of barren mountains, clear skies, and a deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist culture. The village is known for its:
- Serene Nako Lake: The centerpiece of the village, this small but sacred lake is surrounded by willow and poplar trees, creating a stunning reflection of the surrounding rocky hills. The lake holds immense spiritual significance and is believed to have a “footprint” of Guru Padmasambhava on a nearby rock. In the winter, the lake freezes over, transforming into a natural ice-skating rink.
- Ancient Monasteries: Nako is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the region, dating back to the 11th century. The Nako Monastery is a spiritual hub, adorned with intricate murals, ancient scriptures, and statues that tell the stories of Buddhist deities.
- Cultural Richness: Though technically in Kinnaur, Nako’s geography and culture are more akin to Spiti. You’ll find traditional Tibetan-style houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and a local population that practices a vibrant form of Tibetan Buddhism.
- Gateway to Spiti: Nako serves as a crucial stop for travelers entering Spiti from the Kinnaur side, offering a chance for acclimatization before venturing into higher altitudes.
Places to Explore in Nako
While the village itself is a joy to wander through, these are the key attractions you shouldn’t miss:
- Nako Lake: Take a leisurely walk around the lake’s perimeter. Find a quiet spot to sit, meditate, or simply admire the breathtaking reflections of the mountains on its tranquil surface. Locals consider the lake to be sacred, and you’ll often see them strolling along its banks.
- Nako Monastery: A must-visit for anyone interested in history and spirituality. This ancient complex, which includes four temples, houses stunning murals and historical artifacts. Remember to walk clockwise around the monastery and its chortens (stupas) as a sign of respect.
- Padmasambhava Temple: Located near the lake, this small temple is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava, the revered Buddhist master who is said to have meditated in the region. The temple is believed to house his sacred footprint on a rock.
- Lipa-Asrang Wildlife Sanctuary: For nature and wildlife enthusiasts, this sanctuary near Nako is a hidden gem. It’s home to a variety of high-altitude animals, including the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, and ibex.
- Nako Village Walk: The best way to experience Nako is on foot. Wander through the narrow lanes, admire the traditional stone and mud houses, and observe the daily life of the friendly villagers. You might even come across a youth club that organizes village walks and treks, with funds going towards community development.
Things to Do in Nako

Nako offers a range of activities for every kind of traveler:
- Trekking and Hiking: Nako is a paradise for trekkers. You can embark on short hikes to nearby hillocks for panoramic views of the village and the Hangrang Valley. Longer treks to neighboring villages like Tashigang are also an option.

How to Reach Nako
Reaching Nako is an adventure in itself, with roads that offer a stunning but challenging journey.
- By Road: This is the most popular and viable option. You can reach Nako via two main routes:
- From Shimla via Kinnaur: This route takes you through Reckong Peo and offers gradual acclimatization. It’s approximately 115 km from Reckong Peo.
- From Manali via Spiti: This is part of the classic Spiti Valley circuit. The journey from Manali to Nako is long and often requires an overnight stop in Kaza.
- By Bus: The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs buses to and from Nako, connecting it with Reckong Peo and Kaza. However, timings can be sporadic, so it’s best to inquire locally.
- By Air: The nearest airports are in Shimla and Chandigarh. From there, you will need to hire a cab or take a bus.
- By Train: The nearest major railway station is Chandigarh, from which you can continue your journey by road.
Important Tip: Due to its proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border, foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit to visit Nako. This permit can be obtained in Reckong Peo or Kaza. Indian nationals do not require a permit. Additionally, be prepared for limited connectivity, and carry enough cash as there are no ATMs in the village.
