According to local lore, Lord Shiva once meditated here, and a single drop of water from his hair formed this lake.

The starting point for the Kedarkantha Trek is the village of Sankri in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.

1. Reach Dehradun (The Gateway City):

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to the city center or directly to Sankri.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station is the most convenient railhead. With excellent overnight connectivity from major cities like Delhi (e.g., Nanda Devi Express or Dehradun Shatabdi).
• By Road: Overnight luxury buses (AC/Non-AC) run frequently from Delhi to Dehradun.

2. Dehradun to Sankri (The Base Village):

• Distance: Approximately 200 km.
• Time: The drive takes about 8 to 10 hours and is highly scenic, passing through Mussoorie, Purola, and Mori, following the Tons river.
• Options:
  • Shared Taxis/Jeeps: Available early in the morning (usually between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM) near the Dehradun Railway Station. This is a budget-friendly option.
  • Private Taxi: Hiring a private car is the most comfortable and flexible option, though more expensive. Many trekking companies also arrange fixed-departure shared vehicles.
  • Local Bus: A limited number of government and private buses run from Dehradun’s main bus terminal to Sankri, typically leaving early in the morning (around 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM).

Important Note: It is highly recommended to reach Sankri on Day 1 of your trip to acclimatize and start the trek proper on Day 2. Ensure you start the drive from Dehradun very early, as road travel in the mountains is slow and unpredictable, and transport options become scarce after mid-morning.
