Sissu in Winter: Discovering the Frozen Jewel of Lahaul Valley
Sissu’s fame has skyrocketed in recent years, and it all boils down to one engineering marvel.

Once a remote, snowbound hamlet, the village of Sissu has become the poster child for accessible winter tourism in Himachal Pradesh. Nestled in the stunning Lahaul Valley, it offers an authentic high-altitude Himalayan experience without the extreme isolation of the past. If you’re chasing pristine snow and dramatic mountain views, Sissu in winter is the destination you’ve been dreaming of.
Why Sissu is the New Winter Star
Sissu’s fame has skyrocketed in recent years, and it all boils down to one engineering marvel:
- The Atal Tunnel (Rohtang): Opened in 2020, this 9.02 km long tunnel bypasses the treacherous, high-altitude Rohtang Pass, making the Lahaul Valley (and Sissu, which is just 30 minutes from the North Portal) accessible year-round.
- Accessible Snow: While Manali’s surrounding areas might see snow, Sissu, due to its higher elevation and location on the northern side of the Pir Panjal range, guarantees heavy, reliable snowfall, turning it into a blanket of white from December to March.
- The Chandra River View: Sissu sits right on the banks of the mighty Chandra River and offers a spectacular, unhindered view of the surrounding peaks, including the famous Ghepan Goh Peak (often called the Sissu Peak).
Why Visit Sissu in the Depths of Winter?
Visiting between December and February offers an unparalleled Himalayan experience:
- Pristine Snowfall: You will be surrounded by untouched, deep snow perfect for snow activities and stunning photography.
- Dramatic Landscapes: The contrast between the stark, snow-covered brown mountains and the clear blue winter sky is incredibly dramatic.
- Serene Atmosphere: Unlike the bustling summer months in Manali, Sissu offers peace and quiet. It’s perfect for travellers seeking solitude and a break from city life.
- Warm Lahauli Hospitality: Experience the unique culture and warmth of the Lahauli people, who are experts at dealing with harsh winters and welcoming guests into their cozy homes and guesthouses.
Things to Do and Spots to Explore
Sissu is all about nature and adventure in a high-altitude setting.
1. The Sissu Waterfall (Palden Lhamo Dhara)
- Winter Wonder: This massive waterfall, cascading down from a great height, often freezes partially during the coldest months. Seeing the ice formations against the rock face is a truly spectacular sight and a photographer’s delight.
- Accessibility: A short, enjoyable walk from the main village road takes you close to the base, offering amazing views of the Lahaul valley.
2. Exploring the Village and Riverfront
- Chandra River Walk: Take a carefully navigated walk along the banks of the Chandra River. The view across the river to the majestic, snow-capped peaks is breathtaking.
- Ghepan Goh Temple: Visit the local shrine dedicated to the presiding deity of the valley, Ghepan Goh, whose peak dominates the Sissu skyline.
3. Snow Activities
- Snow Trekking/Hiking: Depending on the depth of the snow, you can try short, guided treks around the village. Always hire a local guide and ensure you have proper winter gear (gaiters, snow boots).
- Snow Photography: The untouched snow, the dramatic Ghepan Goh Peak, and the ice formations offer endless photographic opportunities.
4. Day Trip to Keylong or Tandi
- Keylong: The main district headquarters is only about an hour from Sissu. It offers more amenities and a chance to explore local markets and monasteries (like Shashur Monastery).
- Tandi Confluence: Visit Tandi, a short drive from Sissu, which is the famous confluence point of the Chandra and Bhaga Rivers, forming the Chandrabhaga (or Chenab) River. The sight of these two holy rivers merging amidst the snow is striking.
How to Reach Sissu in Winter
The accessibility of Sissu is its greatest advantage in winter.
- Fly: The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (KUU) in Bhuntar (about 50 km from Manali).
- Base: Travel to Manali (or Solang). This is where you will begin the final leg of your journey.
- The Final Stretch (Manali to Sissu):
- Distance: Approx. 40 km.
- The Route: You travel from Manali to Solang Valley and then enter the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang).
- Transport: Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses run regularly through the tunnel to Sissu and Keylong. This is the most reliable and safest option. Alternatively, hire a pre-paid taxi (usually a 4×4) from Manali, as they are equipped to handle the occasional patches of ice and snow near Sissu.
- Note: Vehicles are closely monitored near the tunnel entrance, and you must adhere to all traffic and safety guidelines for snow driving.
Sissu offers the ultimate winter mountain escape, blending the thrill of high-altitude adventure with the comfort of year-round accessibility.
