Tosh Village: A Backpacker’s Paradise at the End of the Road
A true hidden gem for backpackers, artists, and peace-seekers alike.
By Ajit Brar

Tucked away at the very end of Parvati Valley, Tosh is a destination that promises more than just a trip—it offers an escape. While its bustling neighbor, Kasol, draws the crowds, Tosh stands as a serene and stunning retreat, perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature, art, and the tranquil rhythm of mountain life. This quaint village, with its traditional wooden houses and majestic views, is a true hidden gem for backpackers, artists, and peace-seekers alike.
Why Visit Tosh?
Tosh is where the road ends and the real adventure begins. It’s a place where the air feels cleaner, the views are more dramatic, and the silence is only broken by the gushing sound of the Tosh River and the occasional chime of bells from passing livestock. The village is perched at an altitude of approximately 7,874 feet, offering unparalleled views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
The village has a distinct bohemian vibe, with a friendly community of locals and a large number of international travelers. It’s a place to unwind, to simply be, and to connect with nature and with fellow travelers over a cup of tea in a cozy cafe.
Places to Explore
Tosh Village: A Backpacker’s Paradise is a small village, but its surrounding landscape offers a wealth of exploration opportunities.
- Tosh Village Itself: Take a leisurely walk through the narrow lanes of the village. Admire the traditional wooden architecture, interact with the friendly locals, and simply soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The village itself is a beautiful sight, with its houses and cafes built into the sloping terrain.
- Tosh Waterfall: A short, easy hike from the village will lead you to a stunning waterfall. It’s a perfect spot to sit, relax, and enjoy the refreshing spray of the cascade.
- The Tosh River: The river, a tributary of the Parvati, flows with great force alongside the village. Spend some time by its banks, meditating or just enjoying the sound of the flowing water.
- Trek to Kutla Village: For those looking for a relatively easy trek, the trail to Kutla is an absolute treat. This trek takes you through lush green meadows and provides breathtaking views of the valley.
- Kheerganga Trek (from Barshaini): While the trek to Kheerganga can be started from Kasol, many prefer to begin from Barshaini (the last motorable point before Tosh). The trail is a bit challenging but incredibly rewarding, as it leads to a beautiful meadow with natural hot springs, believed to have healing properties.
Stay Options
Tosh has a range of accommodation options that cater to the traveler’s budget and style.
- Guesthouses and Homestays: The most common and authentic option in Tosh. Many of the traditional wooden houses have been converted into guesthouses. They offer basic, comfortable rooms, often with stunning views and the warmth of local hospitality. This is a great way to experience the local culture.
- Hostels: For budget-conscious backpackers and solo travelers, there are a few hostels that offer dormitory beds and a lively, social atmosphere. They are a great place to meet other travelers, share stories, and plan your next adventure.
- Cottages and Cafes with Rooms: Many of the cafes in Tosh also offer rooms for travelers. These are perfect for those who want the convenience of being close to food and social hubs.
How to Reach Tosh
Reaching Tosh is an adventure in itself, as it involves a bit of a trek.
- From Delhi or Chandigarh: First, take an overnight bus to Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, you can either take a local bus or a taxi to Kasol. From Kasol, the journey continues to the village of Barshaini.
- From Kasol to Tosh: The distance from Kasol to Tosh is about 20 km. You can hire a private taxi directly from Kasol to Barshaini, which is the last point accessible by road. The journey takes about an hour. From Barshaini, a well-defined trekking trail of about 3 km (an easy 45-minute to 1-hour walk) leads you to Tosh village. You’ll cross a small bridge, and from there, the village is just a short climb away.
Traveler’s Tip: The road from Barshaini to Tosh is often in a rough condition, especially after monsoon, and sometimes the road is only accessible to local cabs. It’s best to be prepared to walk the final stretch. Remember to pack light, but bring warm clothing, sturdy shoes, and a sense of adventure!
