Udaipur, often crowned the “Venice of the East,” sheds its summer harshness during the winter months, transforming into a truly enchanting destination. Imagine crisp mornings, sun-drenched afternoons perfect for sightseeing, and cool evenings under a blanket of stars—this is the magic of Udaipur from October to March.

Udaipur’s story is one of valor, resilience, and romance.

• Founding: The city was established in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan, the rulers of Mewar.
• A Strategic Move: Udai Singh II relocated his capital from the vulnerable Chittorgarh Fort, seeking the natural protection offered by the surrounding Aravalli Range and the waters of Lake Pichola.
• Rajput Pride: The Mewar dynasty was famous for fiercely resisting Mughal expansion, and Udaipur served as the proud, unconquered capital for centuries, preserving its rich Rajput heritage.
• The Lake City: The series of beautiful artificial lakes—Pichola, Fateh Sagar, and others—were engineered over time, cementing its identity as the city of water in the arid landscape of Rajasthan.

Many consider the period from October to March the peak tourist season, and for good reason.

• Perfect Climate: Temperatures hover comfortably between 10 Degree and 25 Degree. The days are warm enough for exploration without the scorching heat of summer, and the nights are cool, perfect for cozy dinners by the lake.

• City Palace: Dominating the eastern banks of Lake Pichola, the City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Offering a stunning blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The cool, crisp evenings are the perfect time to witness the sound and light show that brings its history to life.
• Lake Pichola and its Island Jewels: The heart of Udaipur is Lake Pichola. You absolutely must take a boat ride here; the water is placid and reflective in winter. The boat will take you past the magnificent Taj Lake Palace (the former Jag Niwas, appearing to float magically on the water) and the beautiful Jag Mandir Palace (or ‘Lake Garden Palace’), which famously provided shelter to Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan).
• Sajjangarh Palace (Monsoon Palace): Perched atop a high hill, this 19th-century palace was initially planned as an astronomical centre. While the plan changed, it now offers spectacular, unobstructed panoramic views of the city and its lakes. The clear winter air is ideal for the drive up and for enjoying the unforgettable sunset vistas.
• Bagore Ki Haveli: Located right on the waterfront of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat. This historic mansion has been converted into a museum showcasing royal Rajput artifacts. After exploring its intricate rooms, be sure to attend the Dharohar Dance Show in the evening—a vibrant display of authentic Rajasthani folk dance and music.
• Saheliyon Ki Bari: Also known as the ‘Garden of the Companions,’ this beautiful green oasis, built for the royal ladies, features intricate marble pavilions, delightful fountains, and lotus pools. The lush garden feels particularly refreshing under the gentle winter sun.

1. Sunset Boat Ride on Lake Pichola: Non-negotiable! Witness the transition from day to night as the palaces light up.
2. Explore Local Bazaars: Wander through Hathi Pol Bazaar for miniature paintings, traditional handicrafts, and antique silverware.

  • Maharana Pratap Airport (DAB) is a domestic airport located about 22 km from the city center.
  • It has regular connections with major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur.
• By Rail :
  • Udaipur has two main stations: Udaipur City Railway Station and Rana Pratap Nagar Railway Station.
  • Express trains connect it to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other major cities.
  • Udaipur is also a scheduled stop for luxury tourist trains like The Palace on Wheels.
• By Road :
  • The city is excellently connected by National Highways and is easily reachable from nearby cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Jodhpur.
  • You can opt for state-run or private deluxe/AC buses, or hire a private taxi/car for a scenic road trip.
